Zun – Burial Sunrise

A desert rock supergroup in the truest sense, ZUN is the brainchild of Gary Arce, the guitarist whose tone has defined the Californian desert sound across Yawning Man, Ten East, Dark Tooth Encounter and beyond. For Burial Sunrise, his debut under the ZUN name, Arce assembled a cast of heavyweights: John Garcia (Kyuss, Unida, Slo Burn) and Sera Timms (Ides Of Gemini, Black Mare) sharing vocal duties, Mario Lalli on bass, Robby Krieger of The Doors on electric sitar, and drummers Harper Hug and Bill Stinson (also of Yawning Man) trading off across the record's six tracks.

The result is thirty-seven minutes of ultra-fluid desert psychedelia, rich in atmosphere and California mysticism. As Spin put it of lead single All For Nothing: "Swirling Santa Ana winds of guitars, tribalistic drum rolls, and Garcia's melancholic, effects-fuzzed taunts" conjure something genuinely transcendent. For fans of Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age, and the wider desert underground, this is essential.
